In a delightful surprise, this week I was to honored to receive an invite back to the Pat Flynn Show. This time, the privilege was to engage in a thoughtful conversation with Michael Behe who has been working for decades on the subject of Intelligent Design (ID). As one can readily tell in reading ch. 3 of my book From the Dust of the Earth, I do not find ID the best approach to take when it comes to reconciling the truth of Christianity with that reality of life’s evolutionary history. The joy, however, is that Pat, Mike, and I were able to sit down for almost two hours and talk through our similarities and differences in a spirit of Christian charity. To my mind, this conversation is precisely the sort of thing that I think is necessary for these days in the Church. As G.K. Chesterton said, “Catholic doctrine and discipline may be walls; but they are the walls of a playground.” While Mike and I were never going to convince one another of the other’s position, this discussion was an enjoyable Chestertonian “recess”!
